Spondylolisthesis Surgery at SPINE/RX
What Is Spondylolisthesis?
Spondylolisthesis refers to one vertebrae slipping past another. With spondylolisthesis - including forward slippage (anterolisthesis) and backward slippage (retrolisthesis), the bones in the spine become unstable and actually move out of alignment. This condition can be caused by spinal degeneration, traumatic injury, or a congenital defect of the spine. Symptoms may include severe pain in the neck or lower back and associated arm or leg pain, numbness and tingling.
How Is Spondylolisthesis Treated?
Spondylolisthesis is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, injections or surgery.
When Is Surgery Recommended for Spondylolisthesis?
Surgery may be recommended for spondylolisthesis if pain does not improve through initial treatment methods, if the slippage is significant or considered very unstable, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: severe pain, weakness in the arms or legs, or problems with bowel or bladder function. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.
Living with spondylolisthesis can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve pain, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
