Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis Surgery at SPINE/RX

What Is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis refers to narrowing of the spaces where nerves travel within the spine. Over time, spinal stenosis can progress to the point where severe pressure on the nerves can cause neck or back pain and/or burning pain, tingling and muscle weakness in the arms or legs. Disc herniations, spondylolisthesis and facet joint osteoarthritis are common causes of spinal stenosis. A common symptom of spinal stenosis is leg pain and weakness with walking that improves with rest. Surgery is sometimes recommended to create space within the spinal column. This gives the nerves in the spine more room to function properly.

How Is a Spinal Stenosis Treated?

Spinal stenosis is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, injections or surgery.

When Is Surgery Recommended for Spinal Stenosis?

Surgery may be recommended for spinal stenosis if you’re experiencing severe pain or weakness in the extremities, balance problems, or bowel or bladder disturbances. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.

Living with spinal stenosis can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve your pain from spinal stenosis, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
