Slipped Disc

Slipped Disc Surgery at SPINE/RX

What Is a Slipped Disc?

A slipped disc is a term used to describe a tear in a disc in your neck or lower back. Slipped discs are also known as bulging or herniated discs. Discs are found in-between the bones (vertebrae) that form the spine. They are made of soft tissues, such as cartilage, and are therefore more susceptible to injury than bone. Discs act as the “shock absorbers” of the spine, and they take a lot of punishment over time. A bulging, herniated, or slipped disc can result in severe pain in the spine and extremities. This is a very common condition that often requires treatment beyond rest and over-the-counter medication.

How Is a Slipped Disc Treated?

A slipped disc is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injections or surgery.

When Is Surgery Recommended for a Slipped Disc?

Surgery may be recommended for your slipped disc if it does not improve through initial treatment methods, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: severe, unrelenting pain, pain or weakness in the extremities, or pain that interferes with sleep. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.

Living with a slipped disc can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve back pain, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
