Scoliosis Surgery at SPINE/RX
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a term used to describe curvature of the spine. It is very common and usually diagnosed during childhood or puberty as the spine grows. Often, scoliosis is mild and symptoms are minimal or non-existent. However, adults with significant scoliosis can experience moderate to severe neck, mid, or lower back pain. Diagnostic studies such as X-ray and MRI are often performed to determine the severity of the scoliosis.
How Is Scoliosis Treated?
Scoliosis is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injections or surgery.
When Is Surgery Recommended for Scoliosis?
Surgery may be recommended for scoliosis if there is a significant curve to the spine, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: severe and persistent pain or disability, weakness in the extremities, or an increasing curvature of the spine over time. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.
Living with scoliosis can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve back pain, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
