Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Sacroiliac Joint Pain Surgery at SPINE/RX

What Is Sacroiliac Joint (SI Joint) Pain?

SI joint pain is often confused with lower spine herniated disc pain, though they are two different conditions. The SI joints are found where your spine meets your hips. The SI joint is a real joint, just like a shoulder or a knee, and can be injured or become arthritic over time. Pain that results from inflammation of the SI joints is experienced primarily as stabbing pain in the upper buttocks, hips, and lower back. SI joint pain is fairly common, especially in young and middle-aged women, and women who have recently given birth.

How Is SI Joint Pain Treated?

SI joint pain is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injections or surgery.

When Is Surgery Recommended for SI Joint Pain?

Surgery may be recommended for your sacroiliac joint if pain does not improve through initial treatment methods, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: continuous pain or loss of movement. Surgery may also be recommended if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.

Living with SI joint pain can be disabling, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve sacroiliac joint pain, surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
