Herniated Disc Surgery at SPINE/RX
What Is a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc occurs when the outer part of an intervertebral disc in the spine is torn or ruptured. This damage to the outer part, or annulus, of the disc causes the inner part of the disc, the nucleus, to spill out from the center. This causes the disc to lose its proper shape and form. A herniated disc can be extremely painful. It can cause severe neck, mid, or lower back pain, and if it presses on nearby spinal nerves, pain, numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Other terms for a herniated disc include a slipped, ruptured, prolapsed or extruded disc.
How Is a Herniated Disc Treated?
Herniated discs are most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injections or surgery.
When Is Surgery Recommended for a Herniated Disc?
Surgery may be recommended for your herniated disc if it does not improve through initial treatment methods, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: lasting pain, inhibited movement, weakness in the extremities, or problems with bowel or bladder function. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.
Living with a herniated disc can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve your pain, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
