Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease Surgery at SPINE/RX

What Is Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)?

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) refers to the age-related breakdown of one or more of the spine’s intervertebral discs, over time. It is estimated that as many as 40% of people experience DDD by the time they’re 40, and the likelihood of DDD spinal deterioration increases as we age.

DDD is often the natural result of daily physical activity or minor injuries, which can cause spinal discs to lose water and their outer shells to weaken. As this happens, the discs can collapse, resulting in increased pressure on spinal nerves and, in turn, pain and weakness. This pain can be acute or chronic, and can affect the neck, mid, and lower back.

How Is DDD Treated?

DDD is most typically treated with either one or a combination of the following: rest, medication, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, injections or surgery.

When Is Surgery Recommended for DDD?

Surgery may be recommended for disc degeneration if it does not improve through initial treatment methods, or if you’re experiencing any of the following serious symptoms: severe weakness, debilitating pain, and/or bladder or bowel issues. Surgery may also be recommended if diagnostic tests detect damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots, or if spine surgeons anticipate any significant risk of future deterioration.

Living with degenerative disc disease can be painful, and may cause you to miss out on the activities you love. If medication or therapy fail to relieve your spine pain, spine surgery may provide the relief you need to live the life you desire.
